Natural Stone Veneer Installation Guide

How to coat, cut and paste HSK flexible stone veneer — plus backing, specs and climate guidance for outdoor installations.

How to Coat Stone Veneer

Sealing your flexible stone veneer protects the natural finish and makes cleaning easier. Follow these five steps.

  1. 1

    Pour the Liquid Sealer

Pour the liquid sealer into a clean container before application.

  2. 2

    Load the Brush or Roller

Dip a brush or roller into the container to soak up the liquid sealer.

  3. 3

    Apply the Coating

Rub the brush or roller evenly across the stone veneer surface to apply the coating.

  4. 4

    Wipe Clean

Wipe the stone veneer with a dry cloth to remove excess sealer.

  5. 5

    Let It Dry

Leave the surface to dry for around 1–2 hours before handling or installation.

Cutting & Applying Glue

Once sealed, cut the veneer to size and prepare the adhesive before pasting.

Cutting stone veneer to size, sanding the edge and applying adhesive with a spreader
  1. 1

    Cut to Size

Use a cutting tool (angle grinder or utility blade) to cut the stone veneer sheet to the required size.

  2. 2

    Smoothen the Edge

Use sandpaper to smoothen the freshly cut edge of the stone veneer sheet.

  3. Apply the Adhesive

Apply adhesive using an adhesive gun, then use an appropriate metal spreader to distribute the adhesive evenly across the surface before pasting.

Pasting

Press the sheet firmly onto the prepared surface, working from one edge across to avoid trapped air. Below: a stacked-stone flexible veneer fireplace, finished and sealed.

What's on the Back Side of the Veneer?

Flexible stone veneer is a thin (1.5–2mm) real-stone layer bonded to a flexible backing on the reverse side — this backing is what allows the sheet to bend around corners and curved surfaces without cracking.

  • Fibreglass mesh backing — standard flexibility for walls and panels
  • FR (fire-rated) mesh backing — for projects requiring fire-safety compliance
  • Flexible fabric backing — extra pliability for tight curves and columns

4mm natural stone board feature wall cladding in a modern Dubai interior

Why UAE Architects Are Choosing 4mm Stone Board Over ACP and Glass Cladding

Following a string of high-profile high-rise cladding fires across the UAE over the past decade, Dubai Civil Defence and local authorities significantly tightened fire-safety requirements for exterior facade materials. Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) with a combustible polyethylene core fell out of favour on many projects as a result, pushing architects and facade consultants toward non-combustible, fire-rated alternatives.

4mm natural stone board sits at that intersection: it is a real stone veneer bonded to a rigid, exterior-grade board, giving specifiers the authentic look and texture of solid stone without the weight, cost or long lead times of quarried slabs. Compared with ACP and glass cladding, architects in the UAE market cite a few recurring reasons for the switch:

  • Fire performance — a mineral-faced board avoids the combustible-core concerns associated with older ACP formulations.
  • Lower dead load — at a fraction of solid stone's weight, 4mm board reduces structural and fixing costs versus slab cladding.
  • Thermal comfort — a stone surface reflects and dissipates heat differently to glass and metal panels, which can reduce solar gain on west- and south-facing elevations common in Gulf climates.
  • Design flexibility — available in multiple stone finishes and panel sizes for feature walls, lobbies and full facades.

For specific fire-rating certificates, panel sizes and technical datasheets relevant to your project's local code requirements, our export team can share documentation on request.

Can Flexible Stone Veneer Be Used Outdoors in Dubai's Climate?

Yes — with the right specification. Dubai's climate combines intense summer heat, high UV exposure and, near the coast, salt-laden humidity, all of which put more demand on any exterior cladding material than a typical interior installation.

Because the stone facing is a genuine mineral layer, it inherently resists UV fading the way painted or printed finishes can't. The variables that actually determine outdoor performance are the backing, adhesive and sealer used:

  • Backing — choose an FR or exterior-rated backing rather than standard indoor mesh for facades, boundary walls and pool surrounds.
  • Adhesive — use an exterior-grade, weather-resistant adhesive rated for the substrate and expected temperature range.
  • Sealer — apply (and periodically reapply) a UV-stable sealer to protect the stone surface and ease maintenance in dusty, high-sun conditions.
  • Application — as with any exterior cladding, correct substrate preparation and expansion allowance matter more in high-heat climates than in temperate ones.

For boundary walls, building facades and feature walls we typically recommend our exterior-rated flexible veneer or 4mm stone board range — talk to our team about the right specification for your site conditions.
